The new year is a time for people to make new goals and habits. Most people make resolutions to improve their health, such as increasing their exercise, eating more fruits and vegetables, and reducing their calorie intake. However, if they are not focusing on their oral health, they might miss out on a vital part of the picture.
To help you make 2023 a better year for your oral health, your Twingates Dental family has listed some of the top tips for the new year.
Refresh Your Technique
Although most people don’t pay attention to how they brush, using the wrong technique can actually harm their gums.
If you use a manual toothbrush, you should hold the bristles gently. Using gentle and short back-and-forth movements will allow the tips of the brush to glide across the gum line and your teeth.
Unlike a manual toothbrush, electric toothbrushes don’t have to be adjusted to carry out the entire task. Instead, they should be gently guided across the surface of your teeth and gums.
The way you brush also affects how well you’re able to floss. For instance, if you need help moving the floss between teeth properly, you should take it one at a time and slowly slide it across the sides of each tooth.
Don’t Rush the Brush
It’s important to maintain a consistent brushing schedule. However, it’s also important to remember that brushing twice daily is not enough to clean your teeth properly.
Instead of rushing through brushing, you should take at least two minutes to clean your teeth. Some electric toothbrushes automatically shut off when two minutes have passed, though a cell phone timer can be used if necessary.
If you have not touched every surface of your teeth after two minutes, then keep brushing. Increasing the brushing duration by a minute or two won’t harm you if you’re using the right technique.
Keep Your Dental Appointments
One of the most critical factors you should consider when maintaining your oral health is regular checkups. These sessions can help keep your teeth in good condition and prevent them from developing issues. Aim to visit your Twingates Dental Center every six months to keep your oral health in shape.
Happy New Year, and we wish all our patients the best for 2023.
